Wärtsilä will cooperate with the cyber security company Templar Executives to set up a cyber academy in Singapore. The academy will offer courses to improve the collective cyber maturity of the shipping community. The courses will cover various topics, from cyber security coaching for senior management, to cyber awareness for all organisational levels within the maritime industry.

Scrubbers as a measure to comply with the sulphur cap in 2020 would be a quick fix, according to Wartsila's director of exhaust gas cleaning, Sigurd Jenssen, and more drastic measures are needed. Mr. Jenssen said that equipping 2,000-3,000 ships with scrubbers by 2020 can be done. But with a global fleet of about 60,000 vessels, many of them will have to use cleaner fuels.

During his presentation at the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Ole Johan Øby Svendsen, Sales Manager, Exhaust Gas Cleaning, Wärtsilä, argued on how to customize a scrubber system to fit the operators’ need for new builds and retrofits as well as to make a feasible installation process for retrofit installations.

The Wärtsilä Aquarius EC BWMS uses proven filtration and electro-chlorination technology. It complies with regulations, and focuses on safety in the design, analyzing hazard to eliminate installation and operational risks. Wärtsilä received type approval from IMO in 2013 for the Electro-Chlorination system and the same design was used for the USCG application.

Finnish Wärtsilä acquired the UK based Transas. The transaction is valued at 210m Euros and is expected to be closed during the second quarter of 2018. This transaction is part of Wärtsilä's attempt to expand its Smart Marine Ecosystem vision. Transas has 22 regional offices worldwide and a distribution network that spans 120 countries.

Finnish Wärtsilä and global drilling contractor Maersk Drilling joined forces to create a 25-year thruster maintenance strategy for Maersk’s three semi-submersible rigs and four drillships. By reducing the thruster exchange time, the deep-sea rigs and drillships will spend less time in sheltered waters for thruster maintenance.

Wärtsila's Juha Kytölä looked at how shipbuilding companies manage to combine financial performance with environmental and social performance, proving that sustainability is a key driver of business decisions. In his research, Dr. Juha compared the sustainability strategies of nine shipyards, five in South Korea and four in China.

Norwegian ferry operator Boreal Sjø and Wärtsilä Ship Design have entered into a cooperation agreement to develop a hydrogen-powered ferry to the Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik route in Norway. The ferry will be the world's first in this size to use hydrogen as a fuel.

According to the agreement Wärtsilä will be an authorized global service provider for all WinGD products and will provide WinGD and its customers access to Wärtsilä’s worldwide service network and comprehensive services offering. The agreement includes services conducted for two-stroke engines delivered under Wärtsilä, Sulzer and WinGD brands.

Wärtsilä Services’ Business Line QuantiServ introduced a new robotised laser cladding technology, for the reconditioning of large bore pistons in two-stroke engines. The new reconditioning process minimises welding, causes less thermal shock to the base material, and replaces the old chromium layer’s galvanic application.
