NIMASA committed to ensure sea time training for Nigerian Cadets

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) reinstated its commitment to collaborations with international institutions for sea time training of Nigerians under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme. Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, expressed the organization's determination to explore and use appropriate ways to make sure that Nigerian seafarers got the right exposure and training.

Hong Kong proposes new regulation on seafarer training for ships in polar waters

The Government of Hong Kong proposed to make a new regulation under the Merchant Shipping (Seafarers) Ordinance to include the latest seafarers' training requirements as described in the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters of the International Maritime Organization into local legislation. Hong Kong has also proposed to amend the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution) Regulation.

Marine Learning Systems, a provider of maritime training and assessment software solutions, collaborated with Carnival Corporation to develop an application for mariner skills assessment. SkillGrader aims to standardize Carnival Corporation’s training and assessment. After the assessment, SkillGrader automatically analyzes the data collected and provides a report on individual and team performance.

Advanced threat protection against cyber risks

During the 2019 SMART4SEA Conference, Robert Kenworthy, CEO of GTMaritme, discussed the statistics and trends of data that they see across the vessels using their services. Namely, he offered a unique insight into the data and emails that are being transferred and highlighted the various areas that this data can become vulnerable to Cyberattack. Concluding, he offered advice on how these can be mitigated as best practice.

Norway gives Equinor safety order for not correcting non-conformities

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway has issued an order to Equinor after an audit of material handling and management of the working environment on Martin Linge A. This showed that non-conformities that were identified earlier by the PSA have not been corrected. The deadline for compliance with the order is 8 March 2019. PSA must be informed when the order has been conducted.

Australia in need of more skilled seafarers

The latest review of skills and capacity for Australian seafarers has concluded that more than 560 new workers will be needed in the next four years. These seafarers will have to be experts beyond standard qualifications. Maritime Industry Australia warns that in spite of expected increases in demand for seafaring skills, there is no increase in training options for new workers.
