Understanding how navigational layers work and what benefits they provide is a crucial part of the navigator’s role. In its latest issued of 'The Navigator', The Nautical Institute focuses on navigational layers, as a means to support and enhance good decision-making. 

Capt John Lloyd, Chief Executive Officer of The Nautical Institute, makes an assessment of COVID-19 impact on shipping, highlighting that crew change remains a challenging issue.

Mentoring is a form of knowledge transfer based in part on altruism, with the Oxford English Dictionary describing a mentor as ‘an experienced and trusted advisor’. In simple words, mentoring is a learning partnership between someone with vast experience and someone who wants to learn. However, how can mentoring apply in shipping? Does it have the same value as in other sectors? 

The Nautical Institute is launching an online campaign promoting mentoring at sea. Entitled ‘Mentoring at Sea – The 10 Minute Challenge’, the campaign features a series of five short films that cast a spotlight on the many ways in which mentoring improves life at sea while helping mariners to grow professionally.

There are a number of new technologies which are beginning to come into use on board ship and ship bridge makes no exemption. Navigators will need to learn how to use these new systems and understand their strengths and weaknesses.

The Nautical Institute along with the support of INTERCARGO and RightShip, launched a guidance on bulk carrier operations in order to assist those interested and improve safety.

The Nautical Institute (NI) announced the formal launch of The Nautical Institute Foundation, a new charitable initiative extending NI's current activities and aiming to improve standards in maritime safety and marine environmental protection. 

The newly elected President of the Nautical Institute, Jillian Carson-Jackson aims to deal with the three important challenges within the shipping community; diversity and inclusion, branch engagement and managing the impact of technology. 

During hold-cleaning operations, the crew were using a ladder and a high-pressure water jet to remove cargo residue from the sloping upper hopper bulkhead. The crew member on the ladder lost his balance and fell backwards on to the tank top, striking his head. 

In line with an increased focus on automation across shipping, The Nautical Institute has conducted a survey seeking to understand seafarers’ current thoughts on the introduction of automation. The responses revealed mariners were fairly pragmatic about the inevitable increase of technology onboard.
