Our special column asked from the winners of the first SAFETY4SEA – EUROPORT Awards, which were announced in early November on the sidelines of EUROPORT, to assess the safety status of the shipping industry and suggest ways to move forward and change the path toward a safer working environment onboard and ashore. 

TT Club, ICHCA International and PEMA issued a new paper 'Collision prevention at ports and terminals', in a bid to improve safety, reduce injuries and loss of life, equipment damage and minimize costly business disruption at ports and terminals worldwide. 

Ship hardening measures are all physical security measures taken with the aim to improve vessel’s integrity in security threats which can be achieved through three defense layers; either with the implementation of operational measures (1st defense layer) i.e. watchkeeping, maneuvering, speed, armed security contractors, or with equipment related measures (2nd defense layer or with citadels onboard (3rd defense layer).

A working Group including CINS (Cargo Incident Notification System), Classification Societies, and coordinated by ABS launched a report providing safety considerations to ship operators, cargo carriers and port personnel when dealing with stowage of dangerous goods.

Maritime New Zealand in its latest initiative focused on ways to prevent drowning. In order to attract people's attention of the drowning prevention issue, Maritime NZ has now funded a brand-new lifejacket project, in which provides a lifejacket to everyone visiting the Manukau Harbour.

The US Coast Guard has ordered 23 New York Waterway ferries to suspend service after a series of inspections throughout last week, which found the vessels to be operationally unfit. Inspectors suggested that the 23 vessels in particular had damage or discrepancies significant enough to justify the suspension of operations. Whatsoever, it is said that two of the vessels have been re-inspected and then returned to usual operations.

With the drowning rates in New Zealand remaining increased, New Zealand’s first Water Safety Month "a Safer Boating Forum" initiative, call people to be fully aware and pay attention when in, on and around the water. Specifically, the Water Safety Month started on 18 October and until now seven people have lost their lives due to drowning.
