ABS, the American Club, and Lamar University (Lamar) are calling on industry to promote the cause of safety at sea with more comprehensive reporting requirements for injury and near miss reporting. This call comes after an industry-wide project analyzing more than 12,000 injury records.

The U.S. Coast Guard recently announced that allowed most of the New York Waterway ferries to return back to service, after being suspended for a series of safety concerns. Specifically all except five of the 23 vessels will operate again with the Coast Guard's permission.

During the last SAFETY4SEA Singapore Forum, Harry Hirst, Partner & Master Mariner, Ince & Co highlighted that in order to avoid a collision, a vessel must first detect and then observe and plot the approach of the other vessel so as to make a proper appraisal of the situation and risk of collision in order to be able to take timely and positive avoiding action. To allow time for a proper appraisal and effective avoiding action it is important also, that the vessel is proceeding at an appropriate – or safe - speed.

Fires have been affecting Sydney, filling the city with smoke recently, the Port Botany is now expected to close again on December 10 for a second time within a week, as temperatures are expected to reach up to 40°C. On Thursday, December 5, 50 uncontrolled fires merged north of Sydney into a ‘mega fire’ on a 60 km front; the state department of health warned conditions were so hazardous that people had stay inside, leading to schools and university campuses to shut down.
