Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO) reported that all seven abducted crew members have been released, and have met with the company's senior representatives, taken for health checks. After 31 days of being captive, the crew were taken for medical checks and other necessary arrangements were organised and all have now returned to their home countries and their families.

If we had to choose one - or maybe two - words to describe 2019 for the shipping industry, these would be: human-focused. Despite the fact that 2020 sulphur cap was on everyone’s mind this year, we saw many significant developments in key human areas. From mental health issues, to women in shipping and safety culture, the industry seems to be putting its people first, trying to boost equality and – most importantly – safety.

The Liberian-flagged cargo ship "Songa Iridium" experienced engine failure while voyaging south in the Bosphorus, which lead to the vessel running aground ashore in Istanbul, Turkey. Specifically, the incident took place on Friday, December 27. During that time, the vessel had 19 crewmembers onboard, as well as a pilot. 

The USCG issued an advisory bulletin providing guidance for vessels transiting through the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands, considering the challenging weather conditions and the incidents that have taken place.

The UK MCA announced the launch of a new funding scheme to support purchase of life-saving safety equipment for fishermen. Under the scheme, vessel owners can claim back £200 per item towards the cost of buying PFDs with integrated PLBs for their crew.

In its latest Safety Digest, UK MAIB focuses on an incident on a commercially operated RIB taking passengers on a 2-hour sightseeing trip. When the skipper was performing a series of ‘S’ turns to familiarize the passengers with the motion of the RIB, one of them lost balance and fell overboard and into the water.

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) issued a notice of non-compliance and an order to suspend production-related operations on the Terra Nova Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, operated by Suncor Energy about 350 kilometres east of St. John’s.

He explains how safety performance is currently measured, highlighting that crew involvement is very important to enhancing safety.

During the first SAFETY4SEA Forum in Manila, Leo M. Bolivar, Country Manager, International Registries (Far East) Limited, which provides administrative and technical support to the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Registry, noted that global demand for competent seafarers has been constantly growing over the years with shortage expected to peak in the next five years. He then described how the RMI Registry together with other industry stakeholders is proactively developing future seafarers through its work at the IMO, as well as human resources programs on education, training, and experience to produce quality crew for safer ships.

According to a recent research, ship strikes are one of the main human-induced threats to whale survival. A variety of measures have been used or proposed to reduce collisions, and this paper proposes an approach to evaluate mitigation measures based on a risk assessment framework that has been adopted by the IMO, namely the Formal Safety Assessment (FSA).
