Container handling in the port of Antwerp is a complex process involving many players. In order to guarantee security and improve the operational efficiency and transparency, Port of Antwerp has introduced a new procedure, namely Certified Pick up.

Port of Antwerp brought seven chemical and energy companies together at the end of 2019 to reduce CO2 emissions and take practical steps in the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon port. The consortium consists of Air Liquide, BASF, Borealis, ExxonMobil, INEOS, Fluxys, Port of Antwerp and Total.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic situation, Port of Antwerp marked a slight increase by 0.4% in its total cargo volume during the first four months of 2020, in comparison to the same period last year.

A consortium of seven major industry players collaborated for the construction of a 'power-to-methanol' demonstration plant at the Port of Antwerp.

In order to support companies in the port in these exceptional circumstances, Antwerp Port Authority has agreed to let them delay payment of port dues for seagoing ships and barges.

Port of Antwerp announced collaboration with tech company Rombit , which has developed a digital bracelet that ensures social distancing and permits contact tracing, to prevent corona infection on the workfloor.

Despite the COVID-19 lockdown and the severe damage that has brought within the shipping industry, Port of Antwerp marked a 4% increase in its total freight volume in comparison with the same period last year. The second largest port in Europe, informed that the coronavirus impacts still remaining limited.

The Port of Antwerp reported that although the Belgian government announced measures to limit the spread of the COVID-19, the Prime Minister asked fro major sectors of industry, including the port, to continue operations.

In light of the coronavirus situation and with several European countries reported their first cases, Port of Antwerp expressed its optimism. In fact, the port said that "there is no reason to panic" as it will further continue its normal operations.

Port of Antwerp along with BASF Antwerpen, Randstadm Belgium and AMS decided to join their forces for their Chair in Sustainable Transformation for another three years. In fact, their common goal is to further boost sustainable transformation by awareness raising, research and co-creation.
