Maersk tanker to test new wind propulsion system

Norsepower Oy Ltd. in partnership with Maersk Tankers, The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), and Shell Shipping & Maritime has announced that it will install and trial Flettner rotor sails onboard a Maersk Tankers-owned vessel. The project will be the first installation of wind-powered energy technology on a product tanker vessel, and will provide insights into fuel savings and operational experience.

EMSA’s CleanSeaNet helps to monitor shipwrecks off France

On 22 December 2016, two supply ships owned by Maersk sank off Ushant, France and oil slicks, which could be the result of unpumpable residues, were observed in the area by French authorities. In order to monitor if the hulls were causing further pollution, the French authorities requested additional CleanSeaNet images over a period of two months, within a radius of 15 km around the wrecks’ positions.

Maersk announced that will cooperate with IBM, for the creation of a global trade digitisation solution, that will move all administrative processes and transactions associated with one container shipment to the internet. The global trade digitisation solution will enable the real-time exchange of supply chain events and documents, allowing the flow of information, with greater security.
