India-Norway Marine Pollution Initiative launched

In an attempt to tackle marine pollution, India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change signed a letter of Intent finilizing the India-Norway Marine Pollution Initiative together with the Norwegian ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both Indian and Norwegian government agreed on jointly working on keeping oceans clean by signing an MoU and establishing the India-Norway Ocean Dialogue during the Norwegian Prime Minister’s visit to India in January.

Maersk to start moving containers on river Ganga waterway

India informed that Maersk Line will move 16 containers on river Ganga, from Varanasi to Kolkata, on January 12. Maersk is onboard India’s inland waterways for the first time. Cargo will now move directly from the hinterland to and from Bangladesh and the rest of the world through Bay of Bengal. Maersk moving containers on river Ganga comes after similar movements already done by companies like PepsiCo, Emami Agrotech, IFFCO Fertilizers, Dabur India.

DP World starts its first hyperloop project in India

DP World will start its first hyperloop project in India. During 2018, DP World collaborated with Virgin Hyperloop One to create a cargo transporter. Now, the first project destination will take place in India. However, it is not yet known when the project will start. Hyperloop is a futuristic mode of passenger and freight transportation in which a pod-like vehicle is propelled through a near-vacuum steel tube.

JNPT is the only Indian port to be listed in the top 30 container ports globally

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has become India’s only port to get listed among the top 30 global container ports, as according to the latest Lloyds Report JNPT notched up five spots, to be 28th on the list, compared to its previous ranking. The port also launched its own App service to improve the tracking of consignment and ease the trade process for the EXIM partners.

Drewry: More than 40 capesizes to be unemployed in 2019

Drewry reported that due to the latest disaster at the Brazilian mine, Córrego de Feijão, it is possible that the Capesize demand will be decreased by approximately 35-40 vessels in 2019. In a timeframe of one year, one Capesize vessel transfers two million tonnes of iron ore from Hedland to Qingdao, while the same vessel ships just 0.7 million tonnes in a year from Itaqui to Qingdao.
