The IMO is advancing efforts to ensure the safe transport of plastic pellets transported on ships, which can cause damage to the marine environment if released into the sea. 

The Clean Arctic Alliance has urged the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to adopt a mandatory regulation mandating the use of distillate fuels by ships operating in and near the Arctic.

In demonstrating its ongoing commitment to supporting the work of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and within its remit as the Organization’s principal technical advisor, International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) will actively participate in the forthcoming 10th session of the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE 10) which will meet from 4 to 8 March 2024. 

The IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 10) took place 5-9 February 2024, discussing the process for a comprehensive review of the STCW Convention and Code and key items for approval in the next Maritime Safety Committee (MSC).

Transport & Environment (T&E) assesses how much energy efficiency needs to be improved and how much green fuel uptake should happen by 2030, 2040 and 2050 for the IMO to meet its climate targets.

According to World Shipping Council, International Maritime Organisation, has set a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 for the industry, and now needs to develop climate regulations by 2025 that make it possible to reach that target.

Australia has presented a study to IMO MEPC 81 evaluating the efficiency of ballast water management systems (BWMS) concerning the BWM Convention. The study revealed non-compliance in 36% (16) of the detailed tests for biological compliance.

In a recent open letter to the Arctic Council, Bellona and the Alliance requested that a concrete zero-emissions policy be established for Arctic shipping, and that all Arctic nations implement the IMO resolution that urges the use of distillate or cleaner alternative fuels in or near the Arctic on a voluntary basis.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, has shared the Organization’s plans and focus areas for the next four years, with the aim of ensuring safer, more secure and environmentally friendly shipping. 

During the 2023 SAFETY4SEA Singapore Forum, Capt. Satinder Virdi, Principal Consultant, Head of Research and Development, Maritime Advisory, DNV Singapore Pte. Ltd. gave a presentation on the future of MARPOL regulations. His presentation included a thorough exploration of compliance strategies, shedding light on the various options available to the industry.
