COP 24 was held in Katowice, Poland, from 3 to 15 December, gathering parties from all around the world to push further work on the fight against climate change. Although the initial feeling was that the negotiations would not end up in some tangible results, governments eventually adopted a robust set of guidelines for implementing the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement, literally on the edge of time.

IMO provides training to countries in the west Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden on managing insecurity in the maritime domain in a regional workshop at the Djibouti Regional Training Centre during 9-13 December.

A ship wreck can be a barrier to navigation. It is a possibility that other vessels and crew can face dangerous situations ,depending on the nature of the cargo and remaining fuel on board, a wreck may also cause damage to marine environments and other coastal interests.

During a ship’s lifetime microorganisms, plants, algae, or animals will gather in its hull, during a process called biofouling. These organisms, known as invasive aquatic species, can negatively affect a ship’s operation, while they also present a threat to the marine environment. However, there is a solution and is called antifouling.

IMO MSC 100 completed its milestone 100th session on 7 December. MSC 100 had a busy agenda encompassing maritime autonomous surface ships, fatigue guidance for seafarers, polar shipping, goal-based standards and of course the 2020 sulphur cap.

The Global Maritime Forum supports the IMO's vision to reduce GHG emissions in the future and calls to action CEOs and maritime industry leaders in favour of decarbonization. 

A rescue diver from China, Mr. Zhong Haifeng, who conducted a number of underwater dives to save three people from a sunken cargo ship, received the 2018 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea during 2018's IMO Awards ceremony.

The second phase of an IMO-implemented project to enhance safe and environmentally sound ship recycling in Bangladesh has been launched at a meeting of stakeholders in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 26 November. The 19-month project, funded under a US$1.1 million agreement with Norway, will focus on legal and institutional analysis of ship recycling in the country.

At the annual IMO Awards ceremony, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim presented the International Maritime Prize for 2017 to Mrs. Birgit Sølling Olsen, former Deputy Director-General of the Danish Maritime Authority, on Thursday, 6 December.

IMO is at the UN climate change conference (COP 24) in Poland, focusing on key elements of the Initial IMO Strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships. Discussions at several side events at COP 24 have highlighted prospects for alternative and low-carbon fuels.
