Senior officers of maritime law enforcement and regulatory agencies from 16 ReCAAP Member States gathered in Seoul, South Korea, on 13 November, for a two-day meeting to discuss the evolving maritime security situation, and strengthen their collective efforts in the shared mission to combat piracy and sea robbery in Asia.

A total of 26 maritime law enforcement and regulatory officers from 15 countries have gathered in Yangon, Myanmar, to participate in a three-day capacity building workshop organised by ReCAAP ISC and hosted by the Myanmar Navy, to share best practices with respect to piracy and sea robbery in Asia.

Following the European Council's decision on 30 July to extent the mandate of EU NAVFOR Somalia Operation Atalanta until 31 December 2020, the European shipowners welcomed the move, noting that the operation has brought a significant decline in piracy numbers in the East African region. 

Mauritius has become the 15th signatory to the Jeddah Amendment to the Djibouti Code of Conduct, the instrument developed and adopted by countries in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden focused on repressing piracy and armed robbery against ships operating in the region.

India's Ministry of Shipping and Finance announced the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Group to deal with maritime security issues arising from potential hijacking of merchant vessels with Indian crew. An additional series of anti–piracy measures have been put in place for Indian-flagged vessels.

ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre and World Maritime University signed a MoU to strengthen the cooperation in increasing the knowledge of the evolving situation of piracy and sea robbery in Asia. The partnership is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.

In June 2018, the 5th edition of the piracy-specific Best Management Practice (BMP5) was published compiling a useful and comprehensive guidance which introduces effective measures for the protection of crew, vessels and cargo while transiting  the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The new edition supersedes BMP4.
