HMS Montrose, which underwent a multi-million pound refit last year, is off to join a NATO-led task group fighting pirates off Somalia.
The Type 23 frigate has a Seawolf missile system, anti submarine torpedoes and a Lynx helicopter.
Commanding officer Cdr Lett said most of the year has been spent preparing for the deployment.
Every member of my team is well prepared and very well trained for the potential challenges ahead and they are looking forward to the chance to make a difference in the region, he said.
During its four-month deployment, the ship will also take part in general maritime security operations.
