Indian Register of Shipping gains recognitions from USCG and EU

Indian

After its accreditation for EU MRV services from EU-notified RvA, Indian Register of Shipping has been recommended authorisation as a ‘Recognised Organisation’ to undertake statutory surveys and certification on behalf of US Coast Guard.

Having received recognition from European Union in August 2016, the Register sees this recognition from US Coast Guard as a major step forward signifying global recognition.

Executive Chairman Mr. Arun Sharma said: “This USCG recognition represents a major step forward for IRClass as we strive to join the ranks of truly global classification societies. With its stringent monitoring processes and focus on high performance and quality, USCG sets high standards of safety and quality in the global shipping industry. IRClass is honoured to receive this RO status”.

Another significant achievement is the authorisation from European Union Marine Equipment Directive (MarED). This authorisation enables IRClass to act as a Notified Body to undertake EC Type Approvals for life saving appliances like lifebuoys, survival crafts and rescue boats, life jackets, inflatable life rafts amongst others.

The MarED wheelmark has become a quality label for marine equipment on seagoing vessels worldwide as it indicates compliance with the conformity assessment procedures.

According to Mr. Sharma, this is expected to open up global markets for Indian equipment manufacturers, who wish to export their equipment, once they are approved by IRClass, contributing in this way to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Going forward IRClass will undertake conformity assessments for marine pollution prevention and fire protection equipment, he added.
