The Panama Canal has welcomed the 2,000th Neopanamax vessel transit through its expanded locks, just 15 months after their inauguration, the Panama Canal Authority informed.
The 9,504 TEU boxship ‘COSCO Yantian’, measuring 351 meters in length and 43 meters in width, completed the 2,000th transit on her way from the Pacific to the Atlantic.
Since its opening on 26 June 2016, the Expanded Canal serves several types of ships, mostly container ships, as well as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.
As informed, 54% of the cargo transiting the inter-oceanic route on container ships uses the expanded Canal, followed by LPG and LNG vessels representing 29.2% and 8.6%, respectively.
Other types, such as bulk carriers, tankers, car carriers and cruise ships have also transited the expanded Canal.
