Tanker skipper fined for marine accident
Dubai court on Thursday ordered the captain of an oil tanker that collided with a container ship and caused a major fire on both vessels to pay Dh30,000 as damages.
The accident happened around seven nautical miles from Jebel Ali Port on February 10 when oil tanker Kashmir, that was allegedly not properly anchored, drifted and collided with container ship Sima Bouy sparking a major fire.
Prosecution had filed charged against the tanker crew identified as SBT, 52, captain, RHJ, 48, marine officer, DHN, 39, machine operator, ABS, 46, supervisor, and TNM, 50, marine guide. They were accused of unintentionally destroying property, in this case the container ship owned by Sima Tech Shipping.
They were accused of negligence in failing to take necessary steps to adhere to marine rules in anchoring their vessel. They lost control of the tanker and collided with the container ship that was sailing out of the port with 20 sailors.
The oil tanker laden with oil worth $9 million was also badly damaged in the incident.
While two workers on the tanker sustained minor injuries, the crew of 20 were evacuated by the civil defence rescue team.
