Lessons Learned: Automatic bilge pumps only stay automatic for so long

As UK MAIB presents in its latest Safety Digest, three fishermen went to haul some static nets. Yet, after sometime the vessel began sinking and the fishermen had to urgently call the coastguard to come to the rescue. Later on, the inspection showed that some equipment was outdated and wasn't working, despite the fact that the vessel had been updated by one of the fishermen five years ago.

ONE ship saves six from sinking vessel at Gulf of Aden

On 20 June 2019, an Ocean Network Express (ONE) operated vessel, the 'NYK Eagle', took part in a combined rescue operation, rescuing 6 crew members from a sinking coastal vessel in the Eastern Gulf of Aden. As ONE informed, 'NYK Eagle' was navigating the ocean when it received a request from CMF to help a small coastal vessel which was sinking, as 'NYK Eagle' was closest to the vessel in question.

Lessons Learned: Always be prepared for an emergency

UK MAIB, in its latest Safety Digest accident report, focuses on a vessel sinking as the engine room was full of water and the crew wasn't able to manage the flood. The report notes that seafarers should cope with a flood incident as serious as they cope with a fire incident. Thus, drilling operations should be frequently conducted so that the crewmembers will be alert on a case of an emergency.
