Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority has completed its investigation of the fatal accident onboard the drilling rig 'Maersk Interceptor', on 7 December 2017, where one person was killed and another seriously injured. The investigation revealed several breaches of safety regulations.

The Spanish Harbour Masters agreed to support the "Boarding Program for Maritime Cadets" launched by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine together with IMO. Through the Program, a total of 111 students have been embarked, with the collaboration of more than 100 national and foreign entities.

MPA Singapore signed a MoU with Singapore Associations with a view to develop human capital for the seafaring sector, identifying that new competencies and skills are required to operate the next generation of ships.

The US MARAD announced the availability of $19.6 million in federal funding to support capital improvements and employee training at small US shipyards. The grants are provided under the Small Shipyard Grant Program, to help eligible shipyards modernize operations and increase efficiency.

The marine transportation of containers is a complex operation, requiring close supervision from the moment the containers are taken until they are safely delivered to the receiver. As such, several claims are resulted from container trade, many of which could have been easily avoided had greater oversight and diligence been exercised.

In April 2017, an electrician onboard the Maltese registered bulk carrier 'Abyo Audrey' suffered fatal injuries while working inside the elevator shaft. MSIU issued a report on the accident, revealing that the entry into the elevator shaft without being assisted and in communication with other crew member, was a contributing factor.

Resilience is described as a company’s positive ability to adapt to the consequence of change, whether this change is initiated (caused) by market changes, innovation or even natural disasters.

Ports in developing countries must be managed efficiently using modern methods to support international trade and boost local economies, UNCTAD Deputy-Secretary General Isabelle Durand said, at a meeting under UNCTAD's TrainForTrade port management programme in Geneva.

The UK P&I Club made a donation to the International Maritime Rescue Federation, in a bid to support its work developing resources, training and building preparedness for maritime mass rescue operations. The IMRF is the international non-governmental organisation which works to develop and improve maritime search and rescue.
