A documentary series 'The negotiators' is focusing on a hijacking case concerning the crewmembers of the Naham 3 fishing trawler who were taken hostages by Somali pirates back in 2012; the episode begins from the day of the piracy attack, explaining how the negotiations proceeded, the difficulties the negotiators faced and how it all ended.

Cdr. Murtala Rogo, Base Operations Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, Port Harcourt, announced on Friday, October 18, that the Nigerian Navy arrested seven impostors parading themselves as security personnel in the Port Harcourt, when he was handing over the suspects to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Onne, Rivers.

Currently, all eyes are on cyber security; but let’s not forget that physical security of one organization is equally important. Nevertheless, each organization needs to have proper safeguards in place to prevent a real threat and protect its employs and assets. Physical security refers to all actions taken in order to protect important data, confidential information, networks, software, equipment, facilities, company’s assets, and personnel.

Following the latest piracy figures from International Maritime Bureau (IMB), European shipowners expressed concerns about the escalating rate of piracy incidents  in the Gulf of Guinea and issued a position paper urging the EU authorities to step up their measures to improve security in the area.

ReCAAP ISC issued its piracy report for the third quarter of 2019, revealing a total of 54 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia during January-September 2019, compared to 64 incidents during January-September 2018. This accounts for a 16% decrease.

The Japanese Government donated 17 patrol boats to Kenya's Maritime Police, boosting the country's efforts in the promotion of maritime security and the fight against terrorism. The Japanese Ambassador to Kenya further noted that Japan could not afford to ignore Kenya's problem, due to the warm cordial relations between the two nations of more than 50 years. 

Cargo theft is a global challenge with a major negative impact on supply chains and the world’s economy. To put this into context, cargo crime has costed an estimated US$22.6 billion in 2015, while the top five natural disasters costed a collective $33 billion, research has indicated.

The US Navy discusses the challenges behind the Internet highlighting that cyber threat against the Navy is a reality. The cyber attacks affect the Navy's security as anyone with a personal computer, smart phone or smart device is engaged to the battle. 

The Royal Navy has successfully guided over seven million tonnes of British shipping, which is the equivalent of almost 20 wartime convoys, through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of its maritime security commission in July.

In light of the 'Advice to Masters' brochure that the Swedish Club published, the Master has to be fully informed of security regulations and how to handle any incidents of piracy and security.
