WISTA releases pledge for women inclusion in the shipping industry

The Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) launched its inclusion pledge. The pledge addresses the under-representation of women in the maritime industry via a series of statements to adopt diversity through individual action and personal responsibility. WISTA International President Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, said that diversity and inclusion are necessary in today’s global and competitive marketplace.

New fuels, new challenges?

Unni Einemo, Director, International Bunker Industry Association comments on possible challenges that will arise due to the 2020 sulphur cap. Ms. Einemo notes that in the ideal scenario, enough fuels of acceptable quality will be available in order to meet future demand. However, this scenario is too optimistic and the shipping industry must prepare to deal with future issues.

Genco assures finance for seventeen scrubber installations

Dry bulk Genco Shipping & Trading Limited has closed financing for scrubber installations on 17 of the company’s Capesize vessels. The shipowner reported that it entered into an amendment to its USD 460 million credit facility in February 2019 providing an additional tranche of up to USD 35 million to cover up to 90% of the expenses related to the scrubbers acquisition and installation.

IMO’s Sub-Committee discusses on safer lifting and winching operations

The Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE) is to meet on 4 to 8 March on discussing draft mandatory regulations in order to make lifting appliances, as onboard cargo cranes safer. The Committee aims to make official the draft SOLAS regulations and guidelines that have to do with design, construction, installation and maintenance of onboard lifting appliances and anchor handling winches.
