During the European Shipping Week, the European Community Shipowners' Association (ECSA) presented its position paper in response to the EU Green Deal proposed by the new European Commission. ECSA has already expressed its support on the proposed EU Green Deal. Now, the Association launched its position paper as a policy response of the industry towards the European Commission’s ambitious EU Green Deal.

A recently launched European Union document adds Panama, the Seychelles, the Cayman Islands and Palau into EU's black list and provides Turkey more time to avoid being listed. The document noted that "the eastern African archipelago of the Seychelles was added to the blacklist because it has an harmful preferential tax regime."

On the sidelines of the European Shipping Week 2020, Danish Shipping discussed the importance of more women onboard vessels and in the shipping industry, referring to ECSA's goal on getting more women onboard. Anne Windfeldt Trolle, Executive Director, Danish Shipping, spoke during the event to discuss about the initiatives launched to increase the number of women in the maritime sector.

The Greek Ministry of Tourism along with the Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry attended a meeting and discussed several issues concerning the maritime tourism and the new ferry connection line between the two regions, which is estimated to start during summer 2020.

Port of Rotterdam along with DeltaPort Niederrheinhäfen and E.ON join their forces to encourage island shipping in Germany and Europe to turn from diesel to battery or hydrogen. In fact, both sides decided to develop a new infrastructure in which vessels can exchange battery containers or refuel hydrogen.

The European Union expressed its support for the first phase of Smart System for the Evaluation and Control of Maritime Safety in Port Access and Operation development, known as Safeport. Designed by Siport21, the investment came through the SME instrument of Horizon 2020 – Research and Innovation Framework Programme.

Following the beginning of the European Shipping Week 2020, Oxford Economics presented the EU's progress, reporting that the sector is under pressure due to the difficult market conditions. In comparison to 2015's results, the European shipping industry faces many challenges due to the difficult market conditions, leading to a decline of the contribution to the EU’s GDP.

The European Union is prepared in principle to provide a subsidy for the Porthos project on storage of CO2 from industry in Antwerp, Ghent, Zeeland and Rotterdam beneath the North Sea. This is according to the list of energy projects that the European Parliament approved on Wednesday.
