Transas to supply simulation complex to City of Glasgow College

Transas Marine and City of Glasgow College signed a contract to supply a simulation complex. The simulation centre in the Riverside campus which is under construction, will be one of the largest, the most up to date and most technically advanced simulation suite in the UK. Training courses are expected to start in Autumn 2015. The ship simulator suite forms a core part of the new Riverside Campus and the complex nature of the equipment and fit out require a high degree of integration with the New Campus NPD Co (Scottish Government's Non Profit Distributing revenue funded procurement model) design. Transas provided technical integration input into the refinement of design for the New NPD Campus project. The simulator suite will include a full mission engine room simulator, three simulator labs: for studying of electronic navigation systems, GMDSS training, liquid cargo handling and DP operations training. Ship handling simulators part will house four part-task bridges with 135° visualisation and a 360° full mission ship handling simulator which will be used for advanced training and certification. Iain Marley, Project Director, City of Glasgow College remarks: "Due to expected growth in maritime training over the coming years and introduction of the Manila Amendments ...

Transas extends Navi-Planner functionality

Transas Navi-Planner 4000 voyage planning software now boasts extended functionality to manage paper charts and publications. Navi-Planner 4000 has been known for electronic charts, publications and other data management for several years. Recognizing the fact that a lot of shipping companies continue using paper charts, Transas has added a new functionality to its voyage planning software providing one tool for both, electronic and paper charts management to it´s customers. Users can import complete vessel's inventory or manually select paper charts held onboard. Navi-Planner 4000 then connects directly to the Transas chart server ashore to gather all outstanding Notices to Mariners within a few seconds. New Navi-Planner functionality provides a clear overview of paper charts status, and any paper chart used during a voyage will be automatically listed in the passage plan, thus making voyage planning easy and safe. In the UAE, it is FURUNO's long-term exclusive distributor IMTECH MARINE/Radio Holland Middle East, who has set up a training facility in the building where they have their principal operation, in the emirate of Sharjah. IMTECH/RHME is currently the only NavSkills center in the Middle East. The vision of IMTECH/RHME in the field of training is to offer its customers a package solution, covering equipment sales, installation, service and operator training. The location is in one of the primary hubs of the tanker industry and it is foreseen that the possibility of offering training in connection with crew changes can be a great benefit to the tanker industry. The fact that other shipping segments are growing in the area will only support the efforts and provide further opportunities. Starting its operation in October 2013, IMTECH/RHME training center is able to provide training on both the FEA-2X07 and FMD-3200/3300 ECDIS models, with a capacity of 4 simultaneous FEA-trainees and 2 FMD-trainees. DNV GL approves Nautisk Neptune PAY

Global chart distributor Nautisk has confirmed DNV approval for its Neptune Pay As You Sail (PAYS) Solution. PAYS enables users to access global ENCs for use with onboard ECDIS systems, whilst only paying for those that are actually used. Peter J Pran, Nautisk Project Manager says: "Despite a positive market outlook, demands on shipowners and vessel operators to make cost savings and optimize operational efficiency are continuing to increase. We are working with our customers to find bespoke solutions that enable them to benefit fully from our global portfolio of ENCs through an on-demand system." "Our PAYS solution gives both shore-based and onboard teams access to any number of ENCs that may be required for one particular trading route. ENCs are downloaded onto the ECDIS for planning purposes, and we then track the vessel. As the vessel sails through a particular area, the shipowner is charged for the use of those ENCs only." As no hardware installations are required for use of the service, additional onboard equipment is not required. The system is fully compliant with SOLAS regulation and take-up has so far been positive. Peter Pran says: "We know that where voyage planning is concerned, one size does not ...

ABB, Van Oord work together for energy efficiency

ABB has signed a three-year international maintenance contract with Van Oord, a worldwide contractor for dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects (oil, gas and wind). "Under this contract, we will service 140 turbochargers during a three-year period," said Rolf Bosma, General Manager ABB Turbocharging Benelux."Van Oord had been looking for a maintenance partner for ships' engine turbochargers for some time. We have clustered a number of services into a 'value added' package. Survey reveals that ISO 14001 new version should take a broader perspective

A recent survey of the environmental management system standard ISO 14001 covering its future content and its current benefits, which received over 5 000 responses, found that it is particularly useful in meeting legal requirements and improving environmental performance. However, a clearer focus on preventing pollution, eco-efficiency and life-cycle thinking should be provided in the next version of the standard. The survey had responses from organizations of various sizes in 110 countries - a majority of whose system is built on ISO 14001 - with 46 % from small and medium-sized companies. Conducted in 11 languages, the survey was run by the ISO committee responsible for the standard (ISO/TC 207/SC 1). "The level of response was incredible. The detail of responses provides experts writing standards in this area with valuable input and real understanding," said Anne-Marie Warris, Chair of ISO/TC 207/SC 1. "The survey was designed in part to get a better idea of what people see as the main benefits of ISO 14001 and what could be improved, as the standard is currently being revised," explained Lisa Greenwood of the Rochester Institute of Technology, lead author of the survey report. "For example between 70 % and 80 % of respondents said ISO 14001 was of high or very high value with regard to meeting ...
