Dock workers got a heartbreaking surprise when they discovered the body of a dead whale hooked onto the bow of the "Mont Ventoux" cargo ship as it arrived at the Seaport of Marseille in southern France, MSNBC reports.
According to the photo's caption, the mammal collided with the Mont Ventoux at some point in the journey between Tunisia and France, but was not discovered until the ship's docking.
While the type of whale in the photograph is not specified, collision with vessels such as the Mont Ventoux is the most common human-caused death for the endangered North Atlantic right whale, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The International Fund for Animal Welfare is aiming to reduce the number of such collisions with an application designed for the iPhone and iPad. The app, called Whale Alert, uses information from underwater microphones to find the animals and alert ships of their whereabouts, according to the Associated Press
