2004 Tacoma oil spill
A unit of ConocoPhillips Co. will pay $588,000 in a settlement with the state to help pay for the cleanup of a 2004 oil tanker spill in Puget Sounds Dalco Passage near Tacoma. Polar Tankers Inc. will pay the settlement that will fund three separate cleanup efforts in the area. So far, the incident is costing ConocoPhillips $3.3 million in the aftermath of the crude oil spill.
In 2006, Conoco Phillips paid a $544,000 fine to the state; the company has also paid $2.2 million in response and cleanup costs related to the spill.
The $588,000 consent decree announced Monday will pay for restoration of shoreline near Dockton County Park, riparian habitat near the Maury Island Aquatic Reserve, and shoreline in the Piner Point Natural Area on Maury Island.
The settlement agreement and the restoration projects being proposed are the final chapter for this tragic spill that damaged Puget Sound and had so many economic, environmental, cultural and emotional ramifications, said Ecology Spills Program Manager Dale Jensen, in a statement.
