Since 2020, seven enclosed space entry incidents on RMI-flagged vessels have occurred, resulting in the loss of 11 lives. As such, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Administrator issued marine safety advisory to remind vessel managers of the need for continued vigilance regarding enclosed space entry onboard and rescue training.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator has been notified of a marine casualty which occurred aboard an RMI-registered ship and issued marine notice to highlight lessons learned for correct pilot ladder and embarkation ladder markings.

In 2023, the IMO MEPC approved the Revised guidelines for the reduction of underwater radiated noise from shipping to address adverse impacts on marine life. These guidelines, which took effect from 1 October 2023, aim to reduce underwater radiated noise from ships and concern particular ship and equipment designers, shipbuilders and shipowners and operators, classification societies, suppliers, manufacturers and other stakeholders.

Due to recent threats from Yemen's Houthi rebels, the Panama Maritime Administration strongly recommends all Panama Flag Registry vessels to take all security measures and avoid transiting the Red Sea, with increased caution through the Strait of Bab al Mandeb.

From January to December 2023, Indonesia, Peru, Philippines, Ghana, and Singapore Straits are the locations that contributed to 70% of the total 120 incidents reported in the Panama Maritime Authority. As such, the Administration encourages all Ship- owners/Operators and Masters to take the proper maritime security measurements in order to reduce and minimize the risks associated.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 10) took place 5-9 February 2024, discussing the process for a comprehensive review of the STCW Convention and Code and key items for approval in the next Maritime Safety Committee (MSC).

The maritime industry had 18 months to adjust to Australia's biofouling management rules, which ended in December 2023. Now, vessels visiting Australian waters are expected to fully comply with these regulations.
